Why we ALL should add more seafood to our diet

Something that we really pride ourselves on in all of our Romeo’s stores is our fresh seafood counters. We love that we can provide our customers and their families with locally sourced, high-quality seafood — especially now that we’ve partnered with the Marine Fishers Association, helping to represent 300+ commercial marine scalefish fishery license holders based in regional SA.

As a country surrounded by the ocean, it’s no surprise that seafood sits at the centre of so many Australian tables — whether it’s prawns at Christmas, oysters on a special occasion, or just a fillet or two of your favourite fish for a quick and flavourful weekday dinner.

In a time when health is at the forefront of everyone’s mind, seafood has become an even more popular choice because of the incredible benefits it has for your body. The Australian Dietary Guidelines and Heart Foundation actually advise that Australians should be eating one or two fish-based meals per week!

So, if you’re on the fence about what’s on tonight’s dinner menu, let us give you some reasons to put seafood at the centre.

Soooo many nutrients

Seafood is absolutely swimming (pardon the pun) with some of the most important nutrients that we need to function. Some of the main nutrients that jump to mind include high-quality protein, iodine, and various vitamins and minerals. Even some of the fish that are considered to be ‘fatty’, like salmon and tuna, are hugely beneficial because of their omega-3 and vitamin D.

This concoction of nutrients is enough to boost the health of any individual, and even potentially prevent health conditions later in life.

Great for growth and development

Whether you’re expecting your first baby or have a school of kids running around the house, seafood is a great option for the whole family. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for growth and development, and assist in brain and eye development.

Help you get some zees

Because of the vitamin D component, it’s believed that including seafood in your diet can actually improve your ability to sleep, and your quality of sleep. That gets a big tick from us!

Give some life to your skin

Living in a country with harsh summers and cold winters, our skin really combats a lot of changing environments and stress — so we’ll do anything to give it some nourishment! The omega-3 and fatty acids in seafood add a natural moisturiser to the skin, and have been shown to reduce acne and add a protective layer to your skin as well.

So, there you have it — there’s no reason NOT to add seafood to your diet! If you’re ever looking for a specific type or cut of fish, don’t hesitate to ask one of our friendly team members behind the seafood counter at your local Romeo’s.
