Barilla

sustainable future

Behind each strand of Spaghetti, every piece of pasta, each jar of Pesto and Pasta sauce, there is a story of our passion, quality, people, and values. Every Barilla product tells our story, our purpose of “The joy of food for a better life”.

Responsible Packaging Saving 126,000 kilos of plastic per year

OUR RESPONSIBLE PACKAGING
A significant part of our commitment to a more sustainable world is the packaging we use for our products, a key factor in maintaining their quality but also in respecting the environment.

We know that it is our responsibility as a global brand to take a step forward for the environment, reducing unnecessary plastic waste. In 2022, with the launch of the new Barilla logo and pack design, we removed the plastic window across our classic blue box pasta range which will save 126,000 kg of plastic globally per year*. On top of this, our pasta boxes are now made using virgin fibre paper and cardboard from responsibly managed forests. [*Based on 2020 classic blue box sales figure, excluding Canada, USA & Russia]

ALMOST 500 RECIPES REFORMULATED OVER THE LAST TEN YEARS.
Meeting the needs of global consumers is at the forefront of Barilla’s portfolio development. We are constantly adding new products to our global portfolio and improving the nutritional profile of our products. Since 2010, we have reformulated 488 recipes, reducing fat, saturated fat, salt, and sugar, and increasing the fibre content.

In 2022, we launched our new “Al Bronzo” pasta, inspired by the traditional bronze-die production method, made with high quality Italian durum wheat.

We also re-launched the range of Pesto Barilla, introducing our new ‘Carta Del Basilico’ (basil charter) – where we’ve committed to sourcing basil only from sustainable agriculture, promoting biodiversity in basil farms, and empowering our basil farmers.

MORE THAN 10,000 PARTNERS FOR MORE SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE
Our raw materials and ingredient suppliers are key partners with whom we have built relationships over our 145 + years. In 2021, we purchased 70% of our strategic raw materials (durum wheat, common wheat, rye, tomatoes, basil, cocoa, and vegetable oils) responsibly, an increase of 11% vs. 2020. To do this, we have partnered with 10,000 farms, which we support in researching and implementing agricultural practices that respect the environment and communities.

A STEP FORWARD IN SUSTAINABILITY
The annual Sustainability Report is how we share our Sustainability journey, the results reached and the commitment to a better future, in line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals.
